Emirate airline will save 18 tons on entertainment

The airline from the United Arab Emirates has introduced a new economy class with increased legroom.

On April 28, 2019, Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi introduced a new economy class at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai. The changes will affect the fleet of 23 narrow-body aircraft Airbus A320 and A321 and will enter into force in May. These aircraft are mainly used on regional flights.

Ergonomic seats for increased lap space are no longer equipped with TV screens. Instead, passengers get access to a USB port and an adjustable holder for a phone and tablet.

Passengers will be able to broadcast entertainment on their devices using the Panasonic EXW on-board system and the new E-BOX STREAM application. Etihad will send reminders before flying to take personal headphones and chargers with you.

Avoiding screens will save airlines 18 tons in weight, Jamal Al-Avadhi, vice president of products at Etihad, told reporters. He also confirmed that the modernization process will be completed by September. Changes will not affect wide-body aircraft Airbus and Boeing.

The airline is also introducing a new and improved bistro food concept. Desserts will be served separately after coffee and tea for flights lasting more than three hours. On shorter flights, dessert will be served with main food. New cutlery will be 85 percent lighter, which will reduce aircraft weight and fuel consumption.

Etihad also introduces new blankets, pillows and headrests.

Tony Douglas, CEO of Etihad Aviation Group, confirmed that new changes can be expected in the near future. According to Al-Avadhi, the airline is not considering the option of economy plus and premium economy, recently announced by Emirates Airline.
