Big cities

Interviewed by Natalia Remmer

YOUNG BRITISH ARTIST JEFF MURRAY CREATES VISUAL LABYRINTS IN WHICH YOU CAN BE LOST. INSPIRED BY MUSIC, GRAPHICS, LIFE AND JOURNEYS, IT IS IN THE ETERNAL, CONTINUOUS SEARCH FOR NEW IDEAS, FORMS AND DISCOVERIES.

Jeff Murray’s universe is a complex world of surreal discoveries where everyone can recognize familiar images and silhouettes. One of the biggest inspirations is the creation of the Dutch graphic artist Maurice Escher in the style of imp art. In October 2015, Jeff again brought his work to Dubai to participate in the Dubai Art Fair.

Jeff, how can you characterize your style?

Jeff: Using pen and ink, create illustrations from inspiration from travel and research. My style gives the impression of a bizarre pattern in which different cultures and landscapes from around the globe intertwine. I invite everyone to take a closer look at them and open a new world.

Where can I get to know your art?

Jeff: My works can be found in different places, especially in numerous galleries in the UK, USA, Dubai, India and New Zealand. I also participated in many exhibitions on all continents, they wrote about me in magazines and on the Web.

What tools do you use for drawing?

Jeff: Nib and ink and pens are great pigment liners. Tools with a diameter of 0.05 and 0.03 mm allow you to work with the smallest details.

How do you feel the spirit of the metropolis?

Jeff: It depends on his character. It may look impressive at first glance, but if there is no soul in it, this city will not deserve my love. And another metropolis can arouse special feelings. Its history, people, smells - all together - can captivate me, and then I want to spend some time in this city.

Do you plan to illustrate "Alice in Wonderland" or "Alice in the Looking Glass"?

Jeff: I have been asked this as a professional artist many times. This is one of my favorite works, it would be great to work on it. We'll see…
