Mauricio, how did you end up at Daum?
I was born and raised in Chile, and for the last ten years I have been living and working in Paris. During this time I managed to work with many outstanding luxury brands, because I like bold ideas and experiments. So, I created lighters for S. T. Dupont, and recently came up with a series of art objects for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, encrusted with Swarovski crystals in the form of a London Underground circuit or a collection of flags of countries participating in the Olympic movement.
Daum has always attracted me with its unrivaled approaches to the production of colored glass and crystal. I think she just has no equal. Therefore, I accepted the proposal I received with joy and enthusiasm, because before me opened up immense prospects for working with such unique material.
But Daum products are well recognized, and, for sure, the company leaders did not want drastic changes in its style and image. What did you offer when you took over as the art director of the group responsible for the three brands Haviland, Daum and Cristallerie Royale de Champagne?
But I did not go in the direction of drastic changes. I just suggested taking a fresh look at traditional shapes and colors. Say, everyone knows Daum vases in the form of a large bouquet of roses, the color schemes of which are close to reality - leaves and stems of green color, inflorescences, respectively, of pink. I decided to make these vases completely white, and only one flower from the whole "bouquet" painted in scarlet or black. It turned out great! Exquisitely and very interesting!
It was decided to embody the same idea of the monocolor in the production of champagne glasses, where the glass itself is transparent and the leg is red; decorative sculptures such as Amour in scarlet, black, white or blue shades or The Amber Moon in amber or indigo. Even our famous panthers, we offered to stay silver-gray, and they became like rare snow leopards. It seems to me that modern interiors require a new color scheme. So I'm experimenting.
Please tell me, is Daum continuing to work with international designers?
Of course, this is one of the main components of success. In addition, we recreate in the crystal famous works of modern art - paintings and drawings of different years.
Thus, the Amour inscription was made by the French artist Ben Vautier, who coined the term “free figurativeness” in the 1980s, believing that the spontaneity of art does not require special training and is a phenomenon of modern mass culture. It was his inscription of the word "love" formed the basis of the original sculptures.
And there are many such examples of cooperation. We are interested in working with new authors; they are interested in seeing their works recreated in Daum stained glass.
What attracts artists to Daum is understandable, but what attracts buyers to boutiques of the company around the world?
Aesthetics, beauty, craftsmanship. The realization that they are acquiring a masterpiece created in a single copy. You understand that two vases cast according to the same sketch will differ from each other in transitions of shades, in other nuances. All our works are made by hand and for a rather long time, passing through many technological stages. But even the artist does not fully know what he will succeed this time. For me, the output of each product, each new collection is always a miracle. Probably, our customers go to Daum for another miracle.
What other miracles do not get tired of being surprised?
Good cuisine, original architecture, natural phenomena and music. All this makes me happy, surprising and inspiring.
